When I started My Kids Village it was that nervous, excited feeling. I was totally out of my depth. I wanted to get going, but had no idea about how to make it happen. A few good people around me gently pushed and encouraged me to take the leap. I had no experience of starting a social enterprise. I decided that the worst thing that could happen was that I’d learn a lot, so I went for it!
Seeking out people who could guide me, who knew some of the stuff I didn’t yet, has been so important. There’s no way I would have got anywhere without them. Someone asked me a great question, “Have you built yourself a village around My Kids Village?” and that’s what I’ve been doing. Getting better at asking for help, welcoming opinions and expertise from others, especially those with a passion for making parents’ lives easier, just like me.
That’s when I realised why this had all felt vaguely familiar. It was just like becoming a parent. That leap into the unknown. The nervous excitement. The weight of responsibility without feeling anywhere near qualified enough to do what needs to be done. Feeling overwhelmed at times, a bit lost at others and the reassurance that comes from sharing your fears or insecurities with someone who’s been in your shoes and come out the other side. Also the thrill of getting it right sometimes and sharing that with the people around you, who have been cheerleading all the way through.
My Kids Village has been a passion project for me for almost three years now, but I’m glad to say it’s not just my project. It took a village to get here and it will always take a village to keep it going, making more parents’ lives easier.
Come and check us out to find your village as you continue to leap around in the dark raising your kids the only way we know how! www.mykidsvillage.co.nz
